The arrival of the first full moon of the year marks one of the most important festivities in the Asian calendar: the Chinese New Year. In 2025, the lunar cycle is ruled by the sign of the Snake, a symbol of wisdom, mystery and a great capacity to analyse and solve problems, qualities that inspire those who celebrate this tradition.

As part of their commitment to multiculturalism and language learning, our schools, pioneers in the Canary Islands in incorporating Mandarin Chinese into their curriculum, actively participated in the celebration organised by the Confucius Institute. This event took place on Friday 24th January at the Paraninfo of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Arenas School made its mark with a colourful performance by the 6th grade students. The students performed the song ‘Shao Nian’, combining vocals, percussion and a carefully designed choreography, which captivated the audience.
On the other hand, an outstanding representation of the Colegio Arenas Atlántico, composed of twenty students from 1st, 2nd and 4th ESO, surprised with a presentation that united tradition and creativity. With a dramatisation of a Chinese poem and a typical dance, they managed to conquer the audience, transmitting the joy and symbolism that characterise this special celebration.
The Chinese New Year is not only an opportunity to get to know other cultures, but also to reflect on the values they inspire in us. This 2025, under the sign of the Snake, invites us to approach challenges with ingenuity, serenity and wisdom.
